Today, as part of Sodick, a global leader in precision engineering and high-performance machine tools, we are accelerating our mission: making additive manufacturing scalable and competitive for industrial production worldwide.
Our journey began in 2015 within the Prima Industrie Group, through the European Borealis project. That pioneering initiative enabled us to develop our first 5-axis Direct Energy Deposition (DED) system, leveraging the group’s expertise in industrial laser processing.
In 2018, we officially launched the Prima Additive brand, assembling a dedicated team and introducing to the market our full portfolio of Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Direct Energy Deposition (DED) solutions.
By 2021, we expanded our scope to include other advanced laser applications such as remote laser welding and laser hardening, with the development of our robotic multi-process cell, IANUS.
In 2022, we merged with the Italian startup 3D New Technologies (3D-NT), strengthening our capabilities in PBF system development. That year, we became Prima Additive S.r.l.—an independent company under the Prima Industrie Group.
2024 marked a turning point. We welcomed Sodick as a shareholder with a 9.5% stake and launched our first fully automated systems for high-speed laser cladding, confirming our ability to provide scalable additive solutions for industrial needs.
In May 2025, Sodick completed the acquisition of Prima Additive, setting the stage for international growth and deeper integration of laser technology expertise from both companies.
Over the years, we’ve secured more than €18 million in national and European R&D funding, collaborating with leading research centers and industrial partners to shape the future of laser technologies.
Today, Prima Additive combines Italian innovation and Japanese precision to help industries worldwide scale additive manufacturing.
